Introductory to CS Research Methods

  • What is CS?

CS stands for Computer Science, which involves the study of different disciplines such as computing, mathematics, information systems, and the theories behind them, among many others. There are different specializations concerning CS, such as software engineering, game design, and development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, etc.

  • CS Research Methods as a subject. (Refer to notes)

It is a course that is part of the university’s CS curriculum. Each student is required to undergo this as preparation for their thesis. In CS Research Methods, students are expected to learn research methodologies and develop technical writing skills applicable to writing research papers.

Research can be defined in many ways. One definition is that research pertains to creating new knowledge or a solution to an existing problem. The funny thing is that this subject made me realize that even our daily activities involve a research process. Simply identifying a problem in situations that happen in our day-to-day lives and generating a solution through analysis (therefore solving the problem) is already an example of research. Another thing I learned is that research is a continuous cycle of thinking, reflecting, writing, and revising, which the process is endless. They say that there is no end to research, and that is true. The more we do research, and the more we create results, and the more we learn, the more questions we have to ask, the more we wonder about the limits of the universe. It is an unending task as we humans should always strive to do better, learn better, and discover new insights through the analysis of data and resources which is widely and freely available today in the digital era.

  • What does it feel like to study data science :)

We have specialized courses such as data science subjects, mathematics, and statistics for CS students majoring in data science. As part of the application of our study, we are also encouraged in learning various technologies. Being a CS student is fun, albeit challenging. Every day, newer technologies emerge, and the world continues to evolve. However, if you can maintain your curiosity and appetite for learning new information, there will never be a dull time as you would be able to keep your interest.

For me, studying data science is a lot of help (and a lot of math!), especially in the world of data and technology. There are arguably more career opportunities as of late, and as long as you have the necessary skills for it, the right portfolio, and the right mindset, you can achieve anything. In terms of societal constructs, I consider computer science to be a fundamental element of society because of how people use technology and computing solutions to conduct research and address real-world problems to improve the quality of people's lives. As a functioning member of society, I aim to spend my time at school learning well so that I may help others by implementing what I've learned and creating something constructive out of it. Developing the research skills I would need by taking the CS Research Methods course would undoubtedly help a lot in my growth as a person in both the present and future.
